Environment ministry rescues rare wolf, sends to Wadi al-Rayan

Egypt’s Ministry of Environment said on Tuesday that the ministry has rescued a rare wolf of the jackal family before it would have been sold at shop in Alexandria and then sent it back to Wadi al-Rayan Protectorate in Fayoum governorate, reported al-Ahram gate.

Jackals are medium-sized omnivorous mammals of the genus Canis, which also includes wolves, coyotes and the domestic dog.

Minister of Environment Yasmeen Fouad said that the ministry screened the wolf, ensuring that it would be able to adopt to the wildlife in the protectorate.

Fouad asserted that the ministry treated the wolf according to the Environment Law No.4 of 1994 and its amendments concerning preservation of species at risk of extinction, as well as the international agreements on biological diversification and natural wealth.

The ministry announced on January 2 a plan for improving services in the Egyptian protectorate areas, including Wadi al-Rayan, Marsa Alam, Wadi al-Gemal, Wadi Degla and Qarun.
