First Egyptian smartphone unveiled at Cairo technology fair

The first ever Egyptian-made cellphone was presented on Sunday at the 21st session of Cairo ICT – a regional technological trade fair – in New Cairo, with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi present for unveiling.

The trade fair was also attended by the Minister for Housing and acting Prime Minister, Mustafa Madbouly, who was accompanied by various executive managers for global telecommunications companies.

The Seiko-manufactured smartphone will be available in the market by the end of December 2017, Mohammed Salem – who is the Chairman of the Seiko Holdings Corporation – told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

Under the brand name of ‘Nilex’, the 4G smart phone’s price range generally costs less than imported phones of the same capacity, varying between LE1000 and LE4000. Seiko’s feature phones will be sold at LE2000.

Salem added that 45 percent of the components of the smartphone will be manufactured in a Seiko technological park factory in Assiut, with the park’s investments currently valued at LE300 million.
